![]() Despite what it might look like, this is one of the most unique and tranquil ways to enjoy the wonderful world of ballooning in Vermont. tags: nathan finneman breedofspeed breed of speed cool awesome balloon riding on top of balloon ![]() The training engines are off people! There is now a real hoverboard that would get the Green Goblin giddy with maniacal delight and it’s called the Flyboard Air. Oh, and it can go up to 93 mph and fly 10,000 feet in the air. No, you did not read those numbers wrong. The Flyboard Air comes from the insanely inventive team at Zapata Racing, which is led by the—apparently—insanely brave Franky Zapata. If the Zapata company name doesn’t ring a bell, its original Flyboard probably will. The part-watercraft, part-aircraft (nicknamed “dolphin jetpack”) blew our collective minds when it appeared back in 2011 and showed riders springing out of the water and then flying and looping tens of meters into the air like marine mammals who forgot gravity is a thing. But this Flyboard Air. This legitimately takes hoverboards to a whole new level. Unlike the original Flyboard, the Flyboard Air doesn’t require a water source to propel itself, although it’s not 100% clear how it works, as no mechanical specifics have been provided by Zapata. Sources including Gizmodo and Gizmag speculate that it’s powered by a turbine engine fed by a backpack full of fuel. According to the heat (and crazy crazy stats) this beast is throwing off In the above video, that would make sense. Zapata also says that the board is capable of full autonomy for up to 10 minutes. In the video, Zapata flies for about 3.55 minutes and reaches a top speed of 55 kph (about 34 mph), although the craft can supposedly go almost triple that. Zapata Racing also claims the Flyboard Air has a top altitude of 10,000 feet, which is just Joker-level insanity. For reference, lots of recreational skydivers jump from around 13,000 feet. Theoretically, you could ride this thing to its max altitude, and then skydive back to Earth no problem. There is no word on when the Flyboard Air will be available for purchase, or even public use, although Zapata says it certainly won’t be on the market in 2016. For now, we’ll have to make do with our much less gravity- and death-defying Hendos. What do you think about this Flyboard Air? Are you as excited and freaked out at the prospect of hoverboarding thousands of feet above Earth as we are? Obviously, there are two sides to every story, and the truth will eventually come out about what really happened leading up to this shocking sequence of events. What’s your theory? ![]() Watch these daredevils longboard down a mountain at night only lit by the moonlight. Its mezmorizing. Probably the coolest thing we've seen all week. Watch the video below! ![]() Thankfully, driver Piotr Fetela and co-driver Dominik Jozwiak escaped this wreck at the famous cattle grid jump at the Rally in the 100 Acre Wood this weekend without any serious injuries. ![]() A British teenager has won $250,000 after placing first in the inaugural World Drone Prix in Dubai. 15-year-old Luke Bannister piloted his drone to victory along an outdoor track, using a camera mounted on its front to steer the craft through a series of illuminated hoops from a first-person viewpoint, and beating out competition from 150 other teams in the process. Drone racing has rocketed in popularity over the last year, but Dubai's World Drone Prix is one of the biggest events yet, with a prize pool of $1 million. More than 2,000 people turned up to see the teams compete for a share of that pot, but it was Luke Bannister's team, Tornado X-Blades Banni-UK, that beat homegrown crew Dubai Dronetek into second place. The sport has already attracted investment from the likes of NFL team owners, but it still has some way to go before it breaks into the mainstream. Particularly difficult is the question of how to actually observe the races. Drone pilots fly their racing craft in first-person, using special headsets to see as the drone sees, but for observers the footage can feel — and sound — like being strapped to the front of a particularly excitable wasp. A second camera following the action might help human brains contextualize the movements in space, but some of the nascent racing leagues set their courses inside buildings, making a chase camera's operation difficult. Still, though, the speed of the craft and the deftness of his control make watching Luke's victory from Dubai an exhilarating — if slightly nauseating — experience. ![]() French professional skier Candide Thovex is back with yet another clip that showcases just how insanely talented he is. After recently seeing him haul ass down a mountain with no snow, Thovex proves once again that the perfect conditions aren’t exactly necessary. Here, Candide starts in what seems to be at least decent powder, but then ends up skiing through water and over-top grass and rocks, all while taking on incredible jumps and landing outrageous tricks. Watch the video below! ![]() Yes, you read that right and we have the video to prove it. Aussie Owen Lansbury got the fright of his snow loving life when he, his guide Dave and Hotham ski patroller Bill Barker from Bills Trips in Gulmarg got chased down by a snow leopard. Check out the video below Crazy, right? Makes you want to go to Gulmarg to ski powder with big cats.“OK – so the story is we skied our first powder line and the guide in yellow almost ran over the leopard” said Owen on his Facebook page. “I stopped just as it huddled in the snow, where it stayed for about a minute checking us out. It then let out a solid roar and bounded away down the slope towards Dave, but scooted off into the forest, where we think it probably had a kill stashed. Pretty amazing experience!” And here’s a still image for the obsessed (that’s me). Look at that cat stalk it’s prey! Here kitty kitty kitty. ![]() When it's snowy outside, people usually like to hole themselves up at home with a movie and hot chocolate. But if we lived near a racetrack, we'd probably take advantage of that, instead. The madmen at RSR, a racing school based at the Nurburgring, took a Nissan GT-R with a snowboarder in tow to the fresh powder at Spa-Francorchamps. With the Nissan's 540 hp and AWD, the video's caption claims that they were able to hit speeds of over 120 km/h [74 mph]. Which isn't that fast for a car on this famous racetrack, but for a dude on a snowboard? Absolutely. This doesn't look safe by any stretch of the imagination. But it's something we've all thought about doing before. These guys just went and did it. ![]() Guy on Quad Gets Clobbered by Car If you were under the impression that riding your quad through city streets and ripping off stunts was a good idea, this video might make you think twice. When this guy was trying to get some riding in, his world pretty much flipped upside down quite literally when he came head to head with a much bigger force. While pulling a wheelie, this poor dude ended up coming up a little bit short on his luck and being plowed into by a car that he couldn’t see coming until it was too late. Check out the video below that shows this dude getting dumped on the pavement in a painful sequence. Luckily, it looks like he was alright afterward. |
